José A. Alvarez Cabrera

Independent Software Engineer & Product Builder

I build ambitious software systems from scratch.

I'm José Alvarez Cabrera. I work across full-stack systems, AI, scientific computing, automation and cloud infrastructure — taking projects from an ambiguous problem to working production software.

What I can build

01

Full-stack products

Production web applications built from the frontend through the backend, data layer, authentication, APIs, infrastructure and deployment.

02

AI & agentic systems

LLM-powered products, agents, tool-calling workflows, retrieval, evaluation infrastructure, human-in-the-loop review, and AI wired into software people actually use.

03

Long-running & asynchronous workflows

Queues, workers, schedulers, event-driven pipelines, generation and processing jobs — the work that doesn't fit inside one HTTP request.

04

Scientific & computational software

Interfaces and infrastructure around simulation, numerical methods, visualization, AI4Science and research workflows.

05

Internal tools & automation

Software that replaces repetitive operational work and connects the systems, APIs, databases and models a business already runs on.

06

From prototype to production

Taking a notebook, spreadsheet process, proof of concept or AI experiment and turning it into something dependable.

How I work

01

Understand the problem

Start with the actual workflow, bottleneck or constraint instead of prescribing technology first.

02

Design the system

Turn it into product requirements, architecture, interfaces, infrastructure and a plan for getting there.

03

Build end-to-end

I work across the stack, so you aren't coordinating separate frontend, backend, AI and infrastructure contractors.

04

Ship and iterate

Deploy it, put it in front of real use, watch what breaks, and keep improving it.

Most software projects require a designer, a frontend engineer, a backend engineer, an AI engineer, a cloud engineer and someone holding the product together. I can usually span those boundaries myself — which matters most at the 0→1 stage, when speed, judgment and one coherent architecture beat headcount.

I'm José. I like building things that are difficult to fit into a neat category.

My background crosses software engineering, computational science, AI, product development and independent product building. I've shipped production mobile apps, interactive policy tools, scientific computing workflows and AI generation systems — usually learning whatever the problem required along the way.

Have something difficult to build?

Tell me what you're trying to make, automate, or figure out. If it's a good fit, I'll help turn it into working software.
